Today is Groundhog Day, featuring pretend forecasts by captive rodents and rodent puppets.

All highways have reopened after Tuesday’s blizzard, including a stretch of the south Perimeter Highway where RCMP said more than 100 vehicles were stranded last night. Some rural schools remain closed, and some school bus services are cancelled.

Manitoba health officials are scheduled to hold their weekly COVID-19 news conference today. The province announced seven more COVID-19 deaths and a slight increase in hospitalizations on Tuesday.

Team’s new name: The Washington Football Team, which is using the name temporarily after decades of complaints from Indigenous people about its original nickname, will announce its new name this morning. The franchise apparently fumbled the announcement by using the new name, seemingly inadvertently, in a video weeks ago.

On Feb. 2, 1956: The Winnipeg Free Press reported city aldermen were holding a closed meeting to discuss a top-to-bottom reorganization of the Winnipeg fire department. Night shopping was the trend of the future, according to the president of Simpsons Ltd., who said Canadian cities that allowed stores to remain open only one or two evenings a week had “antiquated” laws. A coroner’s jury in Portage la Prairie heard there was no nurse on duty in a ward where a mental patient was fatally scalded.
