On Feb. 21, 1927: The Manitoba Free Press reported monstrous waves were “spreading death and destruction” down the coasts of New York and New Jersey as rain, sleet and wind-whipped snow menaced the Atlantic seaboard. Sweden and Belgium entered an agreement to never go to war “over any subject.” In Winnipeg, two clubs — one on Garry Street and the other on McDermot Avenue — were raided by officers of the “Winnipeg city police morality department.” Police seized 34 cases of beer and arrested 14 alleged gamblers.
