Byelection battles: Three federal byelections are taking place today. One, in Burnaby South, is seen by some as a do-or-die contest that will decide whether Jagmeet Singh, who doesn’t have a seat in Parliament, can continue as NDP leader. READ MORE

On Feb. 25, 1983: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitobans would pay a higher sales tax of six per cent as well as more for gasoline and cigarettes; the NDP government hoped to create a pool of $200 million for job creation. The San Antonio gold mine in Bissett would close in May, putting 178 people out of work. Roughly 1,300 Manitoba construction workers lost their jobs in the previous month, pushing the industry unemployment rate to 29.6 per cent.
