On Feb. 27, 2003: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that NASA engineers had worried about the space shuttle Columbia’s safety after its launch; the shuttle disintegrated upon re-entry to the Earth’s atmosphere on Feb. 1, killing all seven crew aboard. United Nations weapons inspector Hans Blix said Iraq had not provided “fundamental evidence” of an attempt to disarm, providing U.S. president George W. Bush with rhetorical pretext for invading the country. In Selkirk, Happy Thought School was so overcrowded that students were learning in stairwells and lineups to use the washroom were “interminable.”
