On April 22, 1986: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a celebration following the Ste. Anne’s Aces victory that clinched a senior men’s hockey championship grew so rowdy police were called. One officer on the scene said “You could wade knee-deep in beer” and Ste. Anne Police Chief Ken Mantle blew the whistle on the party after receiving a complaint that a nine-year-old boy reeked of beer after leaving the Ste. Anne Cultural Centre, where the party was being held. Thomas Sophonow, tried in the slaying of Barbara Stoppel, would not get a fourth trial when the Supreme Court of Canada refused Manitoba leave to do so. Sophonow’s first trial ended with the jury unable to reach a decision but he was convicted of second-degree murder in two subsequent trials, but the Manitoba Court of Appeal overturned the conviction. Sophonow had spent four years in prison for the crime, and a 2001 inquiry cited poor police work that led to the wrongful conviction.
