Teen sentenced: The teen convicted in a brutal attack on a 16-year-old girl, a case that helped push the province to stop placing foster children in city hotel rooms, has been handed a three-year sentence. The attack occurred April 1, 2015 at the Cityplace parkade on Hargrave. Dispute settled: The City of Winnipeg quietly resolved its fight with the federal government over the tax bill for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in June, leaving the museum a multimillion-dollar deficit it is now negotiating with Ottawa to solve. The agreed-upon assessed value of the museum and its land for tax purposes is $108 million, resulting in a 2016 tax bill of $2.7 million. READ MORE

Developers angry: Local developers are angry after revelations a proposed new fee for lots in new residential areas might also be applied to new commercial and industrial development. Developers who attended a briefing Thursday with the city’s consultant said it appears the city is building a case for a fee that would add $20,000 to $30,000 to the cost of a new residential lot. Back to work: Crisis workers at Macdonald Youth Services are returning to work — without a pay increase — after more than two weeks on strike. The nearly 30 employees, members of the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union, have been without a contract since March 31, 2014. The union and management say they will join forces to lobby the province for more funding so the workers can receive their requested wage increases. READ MORE

Notice needed: Manitoba fishers will have to wait a year to withdraw from the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corp. after the province signalled its intent to leave the fish marketer, the corporation’s interim president says. Pricey limo: Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott is reimbursing taxpayers $3,700 after it was disclosed her office paid thousands to a Toronto-based limo company owned by a Liberal supporter. Philpott also apologized for the “excessive costs” related to her work travel. READ MORE
