High cost of justice: It’s one thing to seek a public inquiry. It’s another thing to pay for it. On Feb. 17, 1961: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitoba Liberal leader D.L. Campbell criticized the government for its failure to state its policy on aid to public and parochial schools; he called it a “dereliction of duty” and his speech in the legislature led to a non-confidence motion. At the United Nations in New York, a special summit was called for all leaders in the Belgian Congo to achieve a federal form of government in that country, following the collapse of its two-year-old Liberal Catholic government. Canadian prime minister John Diefenbaker called on uncommitted African and Asian countries to “see to it the Congo situation is resolved in accordance with the best interests of Africans and of world peace.” READ MORE
