Ladd headed back to Windy City: Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday evening, the team with which he won a Stanley Cup in 2010. GM Kevin Chevaldayoff said the Jets will have to pay 36 per cent of Ladd’s salary through the remainder of the season. READ MORE

New at the zoo: A sculpture of a polar bear will be unveiled today at 10 a.m. at the main entrance of Assiniboine Park Zoo, 2595 Roblin Blvd. A press release says the sculpture was donated by Coca-Cola Canada to honor the zoo’s conservation efforts, and promised the sculpture is “one of a kind”.
5,000 tulips: Bright and beautiful tulips will likely appear soon at a workplace or home near you. At Seven Oaks General Hospital, 2300 McPhillips St., the Manitoba Lung Association will launch its fundraising campaign today to sell more than 5,000 tulips to people in 250 workplaces.

Bus attacker will eventually get freedom: A Criminal Code Review Board approved a plan Thursday that would allow Vince Li to eventually move out of the group home where he now lives. Li — who has changed his name to Will Baker — killed Tim McLean by beheading him during a bus trip along the TransCanada Highway near Portage la Prairie in July 2008. READ MORE
MMIW inquiry: At a national roundtable meeting in Winnipeg on Thursday on missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, Premier Greg Selinger said broader policy issues such as poverty, affordable housing, community safety and children in care will be addressed as the national MMIW inquiry moves forward. On Feb. 26, 1952: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that cattlemen from across Canada were meeting in Winnipeg, but their deliberations were clouded by the emergence of hoof-and-mouth in Saskatchewan. RCMP were questioning an immigrant on the outbreak, which struck in Regina. The man had been working on a farm in the area. Tory MLA John McDowell urged the Manitoba government to buy a controlling interest in the Winnipeg Electric Company.
