Orphaned siblings reunited: Ten orphaned Somali children, ranging in age from eight to 16 years, and one baby who is the child of the eldest girl, arrived in Winnipeg on Thursday night after an elaborate humanitarian mission rescued them from Saudi Arabia, where officials were threatening to deport them to Somalia and into dangerous territory. Boy stuffed in Dumpster: Jean-Micheal Morrissette, 13, who lives with intellectual challenges, was beaten, thrown into a garbage bin and trapped there for hours in the cold, said his father, John Morrissette. The rink at at 135 Regent Ave. West opens with ceremony at 5 p.m. The fun will include music, hot chocolate, a fire pit, as well as a skate changing area. Northwest subdivision proposed: A proposed new subdivision for Winnipeg’s northwest quadrant will be considered at a special meeting of the property and development committee this morning. The new subdivision is planned for a 122-acre parcel of land south of Murray Avenue, between McPhillips and McGregor streets, and would accommodate a variety of residential housing and some commercial development fronting along McPhillips.

On Jan. 15, 1989: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that some Roman Catholic dioceses across Canada had purchased insurance to “shield themselves against lawsuits brought by victims of sexual indiscretions by priests.” A clause in the Meech Lake Accord regarding Quebec’s influence over immigration would work to insure that province’s population remained roughly one-quarter of Canada’s. “Boy, if you want the philosophy of the Meech Lake Accord in a nutshell, that’s it,” said University of Manitoba constitutional law professor Bryan Schwartz.
