Good morning!

Your forecast: Heavy rain, thunder and lightning made for an ugly Thursday night across much of southern Manitoba. But the perfect weekend begins now. The ominous grey sky will clear by noon and the mercury will rise to a high of 28 C today. Environment Canada is calling for nothing but sunshine and highs of 30 C Saturday and Sunday, so get out there and soak up summer.

Accused bomber to plead not guilty: Guido Amsel, 49, has retained prominent defence lawyer Martin Glazer, who said Thursday his client will plead not guilty on all counts. Amsel is the Winnipeg man accused of mailing out a series of bombs — including one that exploded and caused devastating injuries to city lawyer Maria Mitousis on July 3. Police laid new charges that allegedly link Amsel to a third bomb sent to an office on Stradbrook Avenue. READ MORE

Don’t share your picnic basket: Some new provincial wildlife guidelines would be a good news/bad news scenario for Yogi Bear. It’s now illegal to deliberately destroy a black bear den without permission from the province. But feeding wildlife from Manitoba roads is also prohibited. The government recently approved two new regulations under the Wildlife Act to penalize people caught committing either infraction with a fine or jail time. The maximum is a $10,000 fine or six months in jail.

Jets brass takes hit on the lake: The NHL club won’t say who, but some members of the Winnipeg Jets brass were on a dinner cruise near Kenora on Monday when a smaller boat crashed into them. Scott Brown, senior director of corporate communications for True North Sports & Entertainment and the Jets hockey club, confirmed some “front-office executives” were on board the 85-foot Grace Ann II when it was in a collision with a smaller craft. There were no injuries in the incident.

Hardest-working boy band around: One Direction plays Investors Group Field tonight, and whatever you think of their music, you have to admit a group that releases four albums and has mounted three world tours (to say nothing of separate U.K. tours and a documentary) knows something about professionalism. Go west and win, young men: The Blue Bombers are back in Alberta this weekend – hoping for a much different result than their last visit to the western province. Winnipeg’s CFL squad, 2-2 on the season, takes on the Edmonton Eskimos (2-1) on Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium. Last Saturday, the Bombers squandered a 16-0 first-quarter lead and were dumped 26-25 by the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium.

New kid on the brick: The Lego Store makes its first appearance in Winnipeg, with an official grand opening at Polo Park mall today. Special events continue this weekend, including the opportunity for kids to help a Master Builder construct an eight-foot-tall replica of Yoda.

It’s not like losing your keys: Winnipeg businessman Blair Grabski is facing legal sanctions and a potential jail sentence after he claims to have lost nearly 10,000 pieces of art on loan from a California college. Grabski claims he was involved in a car accident that left him unable to work and his business quickly went under. The 9,737 works of art went into storage at an unknown facility in Ontario and the person Grabski entrusted them to has died. Where the art has gone is anyone’s guess. READ MORE

She put up their Duke: A Winnipeg woman found a Jack Russell terrier wandering in Point Douglas about two weeks ago and brought him home. Melissa Chung admits she instantly fell in love with the dog she would start calling Duke. Well, lo and behold, a posting she placed on a lost dog Facebook page connected her with Roblin resident Taylor Funk, the rightful owner of the dog. The dog’s real name? Duke… we are not making this up. How the loveable pooch made his way 400 kilometres down the highway is anyone’s guess. READ MORE
