Honouring Helgi Jones: Helgi Jones Parkway is now the official name ofthe section of Highway 8 leading through Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park to Gull Harbour Point. The section was named to honour the man who got electric power for Hecla Island in 1951, a ferry running to theisland in 1953, and a causeway connecting Hecla to the mainland in1970. On June 30, 1927: The Manitoba Free Press reported that a “transformed” Winnipeg was ready to greet Canada’s Diamond Jubilee on July 1, in which buildings took on gala attire with flags flying everywhere, a huge parade was being planned and celebrations were expected to draw many to Assiniboine Park. From London, reports were that Commander Richard E. Byrd’s transatlantic flight from New York aboard the “America” was progressing well and had passed Newfoundland. READ MORE
