In Winnipeg, expect a mix of sun and cloud today with the wind south at 40 km/h gusting to 60 and a daytime high of 9 C. Expect much the same for Saturday, with a high of 10 C, while Sunday could reach 11 C. Monday’s high is 13 C under a mostly sunny sky. To the west, Brandon’s daytime high Sunday is projected to be 16 C and 18 C by Monday.

Help for Cross Lake: Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott said two nurses will now be on duty at the nursing station overnight and additional therapists and mental health support workers have been made available to Pimicikamak Cree Nation, also called Cross Lake. A state of emergency was declared by the chief and council after six people at the northern Manitoba First Nation took their own lives and another 18 attempted suicide since mid-December. READ MORE

Portage Place makes amends: After a controversy about the removal of venerable indigenous elder Joseph Meconse from Portage Place food court several weeks ago, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and Portage Place say they will today announce “new initiatives… to better cultivate an environment of inclusion, welcome, cultural sensitivity, and safety”. A round dance and pipe ceremony begin at 10 a.m., with speeches at 11 a.m. Free Press columnist Jen Zoratti will be there.
Rally at noon: The Oromo community in Winnipeg has called for public rally today at noon to reveal the depth of the atrocities suffered by the Oromo population, which is the largest ethnic group in East Africa. The rally will be conducted in front of Manitoba Legislative Building, 450 Broadway.
Health center for gay men: A unique health clinic called Our Own Health Centre opens at 5:30 p.m. today at 286 McDermot Ave. “The mission of OOHC is to improve the health and well-being of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men,” says Dr. Dick Smith, medical director of the clinic. OOHC services will include screening and treatment for sexually transmitted illnesses, fitness and nutrition assistance, and sexology consultation. Future plans include expansion to add massage therapy, small-group exercise classes, and counselling.

Last day at White House: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his wife and their three children wrap up a visit to Washington today. The Canadian leader will lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery and take questions from students at American University before heading home. Jets taking steps to cellar: The Winnipeg Jets took another stride toward the NHL basement Thursday, blowing an early 2-0 lead to fall 3-2 to the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. The Jets have now lost 10 of their last 12 games. Goose Gossage: On Thursday, the former major league baseball relief pitcher slammed Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista during an interview on ESPN, calling him a “f—ing disgrace to the game” and “embarrassing to all the Latin players whoever played before him.” The former Yankee was commenting on Bautista’s famous bat flip last October after he launched a three-run, seventh-inning home run that lifted Toronto to a victory in Game 5 of the American League Division Series over the Texas Rangers.

On Mar. 11, 1961: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a husband and wife were killed by shotgun in St. Vital. According to police it was a murder-suicide. The minister of Norwood Presbyterian Church was locked out of the church building by the church elders on Sunday. The reverend was eventually able to get into the church to conduct the 11 a.m. service with a court order. The incident was the latest in a feud that had divided the congregation.
