We’ve gleaned the information from Environment Canada, and the weather agency is calling for a string of sunny, cool days in Winnipeg. Today, expect plenty of blue sky and a high of -1 C, while the overnight low drops to -10 C. On Saturday, the daytime high is projected to be 1 C, while Sunday’s high is -2 C. But both days feature lots of sunshine. The week kicks off with a high of -2 C on Monday, followed by a couple of above-zero days Tuesday and Wednesday.

Did racism play role?: An inquest into the shooting death eight years ago of Craig McDougall will look into whether systemic racism against indigenous people within the Winnipeg police as an institution played a role in the incident. McDougall, 26, died after he was shot four times by police who were called to a disturbance at the McDougall home in the core area. Police said he had a knife and refused repeated demands to drop it. The Free Press’ archives are temporarily closed for maintenance, so alas, we don’t have a page from a previous edition of the Free Press to share this morning. We can tell you, though, that on this day in 1918, the Canadian government passed the law bringing in Daylight Saving Time. Here in Winnipeg we’d been saving our daylight since 1916, but this move cemented it. At the time DST was described as very popular. Harrumph.
