Snow drifted as high as roofs. By comparison, today will be a pipsqueak, weather-wise. Up to four centimeters of snow is expected, with wind from the southeast blowing at 30 km/h, gusting to 50. Domestic violence on rise: Queen’s Bench Justice Chris Martin sounded the alarm in court Thursday on the number of domestic-related homicides and says more needs to be done to protect at-risk victims. Martin made the comments as he passed sentence in what he said was the fifth domestic murder case he’s personally dealt with in the past year. Donald Girard, 29, was convicted of second-degree murder for beating his girlfriend Dominique McCann, 19 to death following a night of drinking in December 2011. READ MORE

Misogynist remarks on Twitter cost candidate: Jamie Hall stepped down as the Liberal candidate for Southdale in the wake of disparaging remarks about women he made on his Twitter account several years ago. Recycling depot just super: Winnipeg’s first super recycling depot located at the Brady Road landfill, which opened Feb. 18, is attracting an average of 100 motorists daily during the week and 200 vehicles on the weekend, civic officials say. READ MORE

Ahoy mate: Today and Saturday, it will be easy to imagine yourself captain of your own boat, whether it’s as small as a rubber raft or as luxurious as a cabin cruiser. The Mid-Canada Boat Show is displaying more than 250 boats at the RBC Convention Centre. It’s the first event to take over the entire third floor of the centre, which now spans over two city blocks.

Jets in no-fly zone: The Winnipeg Jets have now lost seven of their last eight games, dropping a 4-3 decision in overtime to the New York Islanders on Thursday night. Kyle Okposo scored at two minutes 20 seconds into overtime to lift New York to victory at the MTS Centre. With the loss, the Jets drop to 26-32-5. READ MORE

Northern art at the WAG: A collection of 8,000 pieces of Inuit art has come to the Winnipeg Art Gallery on loan from the Nunavut government. Stephen Borys, the WAG’s executive director and CEO, is calling the collection “a bridge to the North, emotionally and economically, with Nunavut.” READ MORE

On Mar. 4, 1966: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that southern Manitoba had been hit by a major blizzard, resulting in a near state of emergency. Winnipeg and the surrounding area were effectively shut down by high winds and snowfall. By 10:30 a.m., Mayor Stephen Juba, who was coordinating emergency efforts from city hall, urged people to stay home and keep their cars off the streets. READ MORE
