Opening Portage and Main: Coun. Jeff Browaty has filed a complaint with the provincial ombudsman to obtain a report on the impacts of opening Portage and Main to pedestrian traffic. The $116,000 report has been finished since November but city officials refuse to release it. Browaty said: “Maybe it’s good news, maybe it’s bad news, but I’m guessing it’s bad news because they’re holding it back.” Bill Redekop reports. READ MORE

On May 19, 1967: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that U.S. marines and South Vietnamese forces swept into the demilitarized zone in a massive operation that carried the ground war for the first time to the doorstep of North Vietnam. In Canada, a United Church minister called prime minister Lester Pearson a puppy dog on the leash of U.S. president Lyndon Johnson over the Canada’s policy on Vietnam.
