Cold city a hot spot: When the winter whiners complain about snow and wonder why we live in such a place, Head Start offers this advice: read the most recent edition of National Geographic Traveler, where Winnipeg is named in the article “Best Trips of 2016,” as one of the top 20 places to visit on Earth. Pricy send-off: A government report obtained by Free Press education reporter Nick Martin shows Red River College paid a controversial ex-president $245,491 in her final 61 days on the job in 2014.Stephanie Forsyth left her job at the end of August 2014 by mutual agreement with the board of governors after serving 47 months of a five-year contract. The college has consistently refused to say if it paid Forsyth severance as an incentive for her to leave amid a financial scandal and investigation that led to a scathing provincial government report. It suggests RRC paid Forsyth about eight months’ salary in severance. Forsyth has not granted interviews since her departure.Forsyth now lives in Penticton, B.C., where her spouse runs a women’s community agency. The Penticton Leader has reported Forsyth keeps a low profile and has sought work as a carpenter. READ MORE

Pot Shot: NDP Premier Greg Selinger says cannabis products are “highly addictive drugs” that ought to be sold primarily through Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries stores once Ottawa legalizes marijuana. One day after MLL declared it is considering all options for cannabis sales — private retail stores, government outlets or a combination of both — Manitoba’s premier said he’d prefer to see marijuana sold much like alcohol is sold in this province to “make sure Manitobans get the best opportunity to be protected from them.”

Divided over refugees: While Canadians wring their hands and argue on social media over whether resettling 25,000 Syrian refugees by Jan. 1 poses a terror threat to Canada, resettlement and security experts are divided, too. After last Friday’s terror attacks in Paris, Canada shouldn’t rush to resettle the refugees by the end of the year for many reasons, Prof. Jim Fergusson, director of the Centre for Defence and Security Studies at the University of Manitoba, told Free Press reporter Carol Sanders. However, advocates say refugees undergo rigorous screening before they get here, and their resettlement shouldn’t be delayed.
