Good morning!
Your forecast: There’s a fine line between rain and snow when the early morning temperature is 0 C and rises by just a few degrees during the day — and we’re walking it today. Environment Canada is calling for a 60 per cent chance of rain showers or flurries late this morning and this afternoon. The high is only 3 C. Then we’ll finally shed the 50 shades of grey we’ve experience the last week or so, with nothing but sunshine expected for the next three or four days. Expect a cool Saturday with a high of just 4 C, but then things warm up nicely with projected highs of 10 C on Sunday and 11 C on Monday.

Long-form census back: The federal Liberals have made good on an election promise, bringing back the compulsory long-form census for 2016. It was cancelled by the Conservatives five years ago. That means about 20 per cent of Canadians – carefully selected to represent a cross-section of citizens – will be asked to provide fairly detailed answers about their vital statistics, while all Canadians will fill out a shorter form. The data from the long form are then extrapolated to give a snapshot of the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of communities. READ MORE
Unnecessary surgery: A recent Manitoba Health report on 29 major critical incidents in Manitoba hospitals, personal-care homes and the home-care system noted one woman in the province received a double mastectomy even though she did not have cancer. Health officials aren’t saying where the incident occurred, only that it happened between July 1 and Sept. 30 of 2014. Tory health critic Myrna Driedger says similar mistakes have occurred before with breast cancer patients, such as in 2010 when two breast cancer biopsies were switched in Winnipeg, leading to one woman having a lumpectomy when she did not need it, while the woman who did have cancer saw her treatment delayed by 10 weeks.
