Good morning!

Your forecast: Don’t you just love that early fall feel in southern Manitoba? We’re in the midst of a wonderful start to October as daytime temperatures today, throughout the weekend and well into next week reach the mid- to high teens. Enjoy a beautiful but breezy Friday, with plenty of sunshine and a high of 18 C. More sunny days are headed our way, with daytime highs of 17 C expected for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The mercury dips only slightly Tuesday through Thursday, with some clouds headed our way. Mind you, this isn’t unprecedented. Exactly one year ago today, the mercury hit 17.6 C in Winnipeg. Mid-October 2014 was even warmer, with a couple of days reaching 20 C. Let’s hope for a repeat performance.

Battling zebra mussels: The invasive species is here to stay in Lake Winnipeg, but a biologist says the mussels could still be kept out of other water bodies in Manitoba. “Individuals, if they will just take the measures of cleaning, draining and drying their equipment, for the most part, that is a significant step towards reducing the potential to spread,” says Manitoba Fisheries biologist Laureen Janusz. “That microscopic larval stage is so easy to transport in water. If you can apply hot water, that’s the most effective means of killing zebra mussels.” READ MORE

Rising expropriation costs: Would you pay a plumber five times what he quoted you to fix the toilet? How about writing a cheque for five times what the salesperson promised you’d pay on a new SUV? Well, the cost of acquiring land for CentrePort Canada Way is five times higher – and rising — than the original budget. The cost to expropriate the land for the 9.5-kilometre highway was pegged at $7 million but has cost Manitoba $35 million to date. READ MORE

Ready for departure: Richardson International Airport has added a premium departure lounge, as it unveiled a new 3,300-square-foot area with comfortable seating and food available that is open to all passengers. The catch: it costs $40 to get in and you can only stay for two hours. Will passengers pony up for the chance to relax as they wait for their flights? Given the popularity of the exclusive Air Canada lounge, it could be a winner. READ MORE

Halftime hoopla: For a change, Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans will have something to cheer about during Saturday’s game. Halftime is being turned over to the University of Manitoba as it promotes a $500-million philanthropic campaign; the university says the halftime show will be a visual celebration of Manitoba, from wheat fields to bustling cities, with a video and musical tribute and hundreds of on-field performers. Oh yes, there’s a football game, too. The Bombers are playing the Edmonton Eskimos, who are heavily favoured.

Surprise election issue: The niqab has emerged as an issue that could give the lead to one of the three deadlocked parties in the federal election. But is playing off Islamophobia a winning strategy for anyone? Mia Rabson explores why a woman choosing to wear a niqab during a Canadian citizenship ceremony should be seen as an example of Canadian diversity, not an erosion of it. READ MORE

Trumped-up talk: Donald Trump says if he becomes U.S. president, he’ll force all Syrian refugees to pack their few belongings and head home. Of course, he has no immigration laws to back him up, but that hasn’t stopped the billionaire businessman from making absurd promises as he tries to win the Republican nomination. He’s warning Americans that refugees who have fled Syria could, in fact, be Islamic State militants looking to cause mayhem in the U.S. READ MORE

Winnipeg Jets Captain Andrew Ladd speaks to the media one last time following the Jets first round playoff series with the Anaheim Ducks, who swept Winnipeg four games to none.

Andrew Ladd: The Winnipeg Jets captain is trending locally for a couple of reasons. He’s had a nagging injury all through training camp, and he left Thursday’s game against the Calgary Flames early for “precautionary reasons,” according to head coach Paul Maurice. But Ladd is also an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, and his agent and the Jets have now spent three months on negotiations without a new long-term deal in place. READ MORE

On Oct. 2, 1911: The Manitoba Free Press reported that a flood of nearly half a billion gallons of water from the Bayless Pulp and Paper Company had wiped out the town of Austin, Pa., killing between 150 and 200 people. Conflicting reports made the opening of a war between Turkey and Italy difficult to follow; there were reports of rioting in Italy, and appeals from Turkey to the religious fanaticism of the Arabs. Trade reciprocity between Canada and the U.S. was still a contentious political issue and the editorial considered whether the Liberal party’s position on it was responsible for its poor showing in recent elections.
