On Jan. 10, 1961: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Liberal leader Lester B. Pearson, speaking at a rally, urged Canada to repair strained relations with the United States. Russian authorities in Moscow told representatives at the U.S. embassy that 1961 would be the last chance for a pact between the two countries, urging a meeting with U.S. president-elect John F.
