On Jan. 10, 1940: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Britain’s Royal Air Force conducted raids on Germany’s northwest coast, targeting German mine-laying bases on the Frisian islands. The United Kingdom dipped deeply in Canada’s wheat supply, buying 20,000,000 bushels. A reporter visiting Winnipeg soldiers in London noted many were suffering from colds.
