Pay freeze exception?: The Progressive Conservative government is freezing the pay of Manitoba’s publicly compensated workers but when it comes to provincial judges who currently earn $259,000 a year, it seems the 42 judges are in line to get three years of pay hikes. Larry Kusch reports. READ MORE

Reconciliation Way: The name of the 106-year-old Arlington Street Bridge should be changed to Reconciliation Way, according to Councillor Vivian Santos, who plans to introduce the motion at a Tuesday committee meeting. “It spans the centre of Winnipeg, connecting the north and the south,” she said. Rally at noon: A rally is scheduled for noon today outside the Manitoba Legislative building. The Cree Partners of the Keeyask Hydropower Limited Partnership are concerned about what they say is government inaction of a report by the Clean Environment Commission. Jury deliberates: Winnipeg jury is set to begin deliberations today to weigh manslaughter allegations against two men accused in the death of 29-year-old Jeanenne Fontaine. She was shot in the back of her head inside her home at 457 Aberdeen Ave. in 2017 in a drug-related incident. READ MORE
Controversial parenting: A video conference from Calgary is scheduled for today with David and Collet Stephan, who are facing a new trial in the meningitis death of their son. They want a stay of proceedings and a $4-million payment from Alberta Justice for their court costs. Their original trial heard evidence they treated the boy with garlic, onion and horseradish rather than take him to a doctor. READ MORE

On Jan. 18, 1990: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in a controversial referendum, residents in the RM of Rossburn voted to oppose plans to establish a hazardous waste site near “a bunch of Ukrainians”; the proposal had prompted bitter debate within the community. A murder suspect who was described as depressed and suicidal by those who knew him was nonetheless able to meet all the requirements to obtain a handgun, according to Winnipeg police. More than 100 marijuana plants were seized by Winnipeg police at a St. Boniface house.
