On Jan. 19, 1979: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Tehran, one million supporters of Ayatollah Khomeini marched through the street to support his quest to make Iran an Islamic republic, with Khomeini as leader; similar demonstrations involving many thousands of people took place in other cities around the country. Canadian food stores that used the words “ounce” or “pound” in addition to metric measurements in newspaper advertisements after 1981 would be committing a criminal offence, according to the Metric Commission. In Manitoba, producer and processor calls for higher fluid milk prices could push the cost of a litre up between eight and nine cents in southern Manitoba and between 9.77 to 13. 27 cents in northern Manitoba. The maximum prices charged at the time by producers in southern Manitoba ranged from 55 cents per litre (homogenized milk) to 49 cents (skim); in Flin Flon and Thomspon, the prices ranged from 59 cents per litre (homogenized milk) to 53 cents (skim).
