On the bright side

Started by Omar Kinnarath in March 2020 as a result of increasing needs at the beginning of the pandemic, a grassroots volunteer initiative called the Mutual Aid Society (MAS) helps connect those in need with those able to provide assistance — no strings attached. Janine LeGal has the story.

On this date

On Jan. 2, 1923: The Manitoba Free Press reported a paper mill in Fort William, Ont., had produced its first run of newsprint — making it the first paper ever made in Fort William. Saskatoon had brought in $1.8 million in building permits, showing the city saw more physical growth in 1922 “than any year since the boom days.” High winds and heavy ice snapped telegraph and telephone wires and took down poles in Wellwood, Man. leaving nearly every business out of service.
