Departing for Davos: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to leave this morning for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. More than 60 world leaders will attend the meeting, which begins Tuesday. The White House has said U.S. President Donald Trump plans to detail his America First policy in Davos later this week. Shutdown showdown: A U.S. Senate vote to break a Democratic filibuster on a short-term government spending bill is scheduled for later this morning. Negotiations continued late last night on a proposal to end the shutdown, which began at midnight Saturday as the minority Democrats seek concessions on immigration and other issues. Republican leaders have said they would not negotiate on immigration until the shutdown ends. READ MORE

On Jan. 22, 1932: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a six-cent increase in the tax on gasoline in Manitoba was seen as “inevitable”; it was one of a number of measures proposed to “keep the business of the province running adequately through difficult times.” The U.S. Navy dirigible Akron made its first successful mooring to a naval vessel.
