Soccer star sentenced: Cristiano Ronaldo was given a two-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to tax fraud in Spain. The former Real Madrid player must pay nearly US$21.6 million in fines.

On Jan. 22, 1931: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in parts of Ontario, temperatures reached as low as -39 F. Premier R.B. Bennett of Saskatchewan, also serving as finance minister, gave his consent to an agreement that the Imperial Bank of Canada would purchase the business of the Weyburn Security bank. In Vancouver, eight men were injured when police broke up a “Lenin Memorial” demonstration, dispersing a crowd of thousands.
