Republicans approve rules: The impeachment trial of U.S. President Donald Trump will resume in the Senate at about noon CT. The first session took more than 12 hours and ended shortly before 1 a.m. CT, with Republicans rejecting Democratic amendments to the rules for the trial. Late Tuesday night, Chief Justice John Roberts admonished both sides to “remember where they are” and “avoid speaking in a manner and using language that is not conducive to civil discourse.” READ MORE

On Jan. 22, 1926: The Manitoba Free Press reported that tensions were mounting between Germany and Italy, due in part to the latter’s leader, Benito Mussolini, having decreed the Italianization of family names in Tyrol, where many of the names were German. In Saskatchewan, 300 Doukhobor families (roughly 2,500 people) had sold their settlement of 50,000 acres there to the Ukrainian Immigration and Colonization Association of Edmonton; the Doukhobors planned to return to Russia, and refugees from Manchuria would come to live on the land instead.
