Tsunami scare: A tsunami warning was cancelled for the coastal area of British Columbia this morning after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 struck off Alaska. Earlier today in Tofino, warning sirens sounded and residents in low-lying areas were told to go to higher ground. READ MORE

Speech in Switzerland: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, is expected to focus on the benefits of gender equality and the advancement of women in the workplace, The Canadian Press reports. Revised deal reached: Canada and the remaining members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership have agreed to a revised trade agreement, international media reports state. Word of an agreement came hours after a Canadian government official told The Canadian Press that Ottawa was hopeful a revised deal would be reached as early as today. Cosby does comedy: Comedian Bill Cosby performed onstage last night for the first time since about 60 women came forward to accuse him of drugging and sexually assaulting them. On Jan. 23, 1952: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the RCAF had announced a $2-million plan to build 150 housing units in Portage la Prairie. The tragic death of a Winnipeg girl due to leukemia was thought to be a major factor in the later murder-suicide of her parents. An Egyptian newspaper claimed Russia promised to aid all Middle Eastern countries in freeing themselves of “western economic domination.” According to Russian diplomat Maxim Litvinov, Josef Stalin’s death would not change the course of Russian policy.
