On Jan. 23, 1941: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that British forces captured Tobruk in Libya, taking 14,000 Italians prisoner. Influenza struck hard at the Poplar River reserve in Manitoba, and medical and other aid was brought by airplane to the community. In the United States, aviator Charles Lindbergh told the House of Representatives’ foreign affairs committee that the Second World War could not be won by Britain and the United States, and urged what he called a negotiated peace.
