On Jan. 28, 1930: The Manitoba Free Press reported that four passengers and the pilot of a commercial airline flight died when their plane crashed at Fairfax Airport in Kansas City. A ragged sea of ice and muddy water flooded a large area in Indiana, according to an eyewitness who flew over the affected area. Four men were set down on the Arctic tundra at the site where a Carl Ben Eielson and his mechanic were believed to have crashed; the searchers were looking for the missing men’s bodies.
