Talking taxis: The city is hosting an information session today about the processes and requirements for the taxi licence lottery. Sixty licences that take effect March 1 and another 60 effective Dec. 1 will be allocated through a lottery after a later date. The meeting, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre, will be immediately followed by a meeting on dispatcher licensing.

On Jan. 29, 1992: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a former Nelson House band chief who had won $1.35 million in the Lotto6/49 was being pressured to repay the $500,000 he owed to the band; the band alleged he was claiming his estranged ex-wife had bought the winning ticket in order to avoid paying earlier court-ordered award to the band. Manitoba’s provincial government rejected a proposal to create a separate justice system for indigenous people, which was the central recommendation of the $3-million aboriginal justice inquiry.
