On Jan. 29, 1981: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in St. Pierre-Jolys, the impending demolition of the community’s 76-year-old Catholic church would mean the end of community support for the parish, according to the chairman of the parishioners’ group. Alcan Smelters and Chemicals Ltd. wanted a massive supply of cheap power guaranteed for at least half a century before it would build a $500-million smelter near Winnipeg.
