On Jan. 3, 1922: The Manitoba Free Press reported that independence advocate Mahatma Gandhi intended to continue his campaign of non-violence to secure home rule for India. An anonymous writer struck terror into a small French town; after the death of a local police official whose wife had received many slanderous letters, a second official also died, having “lost his mind” after a similar anonymous harassment barrage against his wife.
