On Jan. 30, 1991: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitoba’s 9,500 striking nurses would vote on a deal that would include a 14 per cent wage increase over two years. Quebec premier Robert Bourassa demanded a battery of powers that would make the province a near-sovereign state, warning that if not not granted them, his province would hold a referendum on separating from Canada. U.S. president George H.W. Bush said the U.S. would help secure a lasting peace in the Middle East at the end of the Persian Gulf war.
