Set for sovereignty: Brexit will become official when Britain leaves the European Union at midnight Brussels time (5 p.m. CT), more than three years after the split was approved by 52 per cent of voters in a referendum. Britain has since had two new prime ministers. READ MORE

Winnipeg writer dies: Longtime author Jake MacDonald has died in Mexico. The Free Press will have more on this today. MacDonald won a Winnipeg Arts Council award last year, shortly after his first play, The Cottage, debuted at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Coronavirus crisis: The death toll in China has increased to 213, including 43 new fatalities, and there are nearly 10,000 people infected around the world. Meanwhile, the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg has tested samples from 101 people as of Thursday. Dylan Robertson reports. READ MORE

On Jan. 31, 1996: The Winnipeg Free press reported that a Winnipeg man who had been the recipient of a successful double-lung transplant five years earlier had suffered a relapse, and could need another double-lung transplant; he was receiving medical care in a Toronto hospital.
