On Jan. 7, 1955: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that grain exports through Churchill were booming, with the port solidly booked for the 1955 navigation season; the sale of 35 cargoes, representing 12,000,000 bushels of top grade Canadian wheat, was confirmed. A plane crash in Saskatchewan killed a young Hudson’s Bay Company officer and his family, who were from Manitoba. A Trans Canada airlines flight arrived safely in Winnipeg, despite a potential mishap over Moose Jaw, in which the pilot had to narrowly avoid another airplane converging on the right-of-way.
