Arena on agenda: The city’s property and development committee will today consider a plan to sell the old Vimy Arena to a provincial Crown corporation, which would then lease the land to a non-profit addiction treatment centre. The Bruce Oake Memorial Foundation would be named for the eldest son of broadcaster Scott Oake.
Carlton lanes closed: Carlton Street is closed to southbound traffic between Graham and St. Mary avenues from 6 a.m. today until 6 p.m. Friday for tower crane work. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and allow for additional travel time. The west sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians, and buses will not be affected.
Stirring speech: Oprah Winfrey stole the show while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award at last night’s Golden Globes ceremony. After her speech, where actresses wore black in an expression of empowerment in the post-Harvey Weinstein era, social-media users wondered whether Winfrey would run for U.S. president in 2020. Sears shuts down: The city’s last two Sears stores, in St. Vital and Kildonan Place malls, will close their doors for the final time tonight. Both stores are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. After a round of store closures, all existing Sears Canada locations started liquidation sales in October, and remaining stores are scheduled to close by the end of the month.
