Canadians killed: Sixty-three Canadians were among the 176 people killed when a Ukraine International Airlines flight crashed shortly after takeoff from Iran’s main airport. The incident happened hours after Iran fired missiles at two military bases housing U.S. soldiers in Iraq. A spokesman for Iran’s government said it appeared a fire broke out in one of the Boeing 737-800’s engines. READ MORE

Canadian reaction: Canada’s foreign affairs minister, François-Philippe Champagne, tweeted this morning about the plane crash. “Our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims, including many Canadians. I have been in touch with the government of Ukraine. We will continue to keep Canadians informed as the situation evolves.” READ MORE

Statement on strikes: U.S. President Donald Trump said he will make a statement about Iran’s missile attacks — a retaliation for his ordering the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani — later this morning. There are indications there might not be more immediate retaliation by either side, The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

On Jan. 8, 1965: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the United States, after much deliberation and some foreign encouragement, removed part of the gold “cover” it kept on its money supply, making available more gold to meet obligations when foreign countries cashed in large amounts of U.S. dollars for gold. Great Britain stepped in to support the pound sterling when a wave of selling hit the exchange market, weakening the country’s currency. The Winnipeg parents of 12 children were sentenced to one year in jail after they pleaded guilty to abandoning the children from Dec. 29 to Jan. 2 in contravention of the Child Welfare Act.
