No radio call, report says: An initial report by Iranian investigators states the crew aboard a Ukrainian passenger plane that crashed, killing all 176 people on board, never made a radio call for help. The burning plane was trying to turn back to Tehran’s airport when it went down, the report states. READ MORE

On Jan. 9, 1975: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that searchers combing the wreckage of a building that exploded in North Bay, Ont., found the body of an eighth victim; the explosion, which was followed by fire with flames reaching a height of 150 feet above the building, came after gas crews were seen working outside the office/apartment building, but no official cause for the explosion had been announced. In Winnipeg, an early-morning blaze caused between $200,000 and $250,000 worth of damage to a K-Tel warehouse. Saudi Arabia concluded a $756-million deal with the United States to buy several squadrons of U.S.-made fighter planes. READ MORE
