Manitoba Federation of Labour executive director Anna Rothney says the Progressive Conservative government has demonstrated a “disappointing” lack of action on paid sick leave since April 2021, when the organization first called for legislation guaranteeing 10 paid sick days annually. On the bright side
Less than six months after moving to Winnipeg from Lagos, Nigeria, Yemi Ajibola had applied to help out with the Ironman Outdoor Curling Bonspiel, a not-for-profit tournament that has raised more than $185,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and other Canadian charities. Ajibola wasn’t familiar with curling, but he was attracted to the event’s charitable aspect. “When I read about Ironman, it was something I could connect with because the cause is a noble one,” the 42-year-old says. “I applied to volunteer and I got picked.” Aaron Epp has the story.

On Jan. 9, 1931: The Manitoba Free Press reported that in two separate attempted holdups on Winnipeg streets, the would-be bandits failed to make off with any money. In one incident, though one of the two robbers pointed a revolver at victim Harry Taplin’s head, Taplin attacked his assailant, knocking the weapon from his grasp; the thieves fled. In the second robbery, a grocery delivery boy was accosted by two men, but all he had in his possession were a rosary and beads, which the men stole. In Brownwood, Texas, a nurse single-handedly saved five patients from a burning hospital by carrying each of them out of the building. Search our archives for more here.
