On July 14, 1958: The Winnipeg Free Press reported federal finance minister Donald Fleming announced a public refunding loan, which marked the largest financial undertaking in Canada’s history, involving the exchange of new bonds for old, to a maximium amount of up to $6.4 billion. Fears of war in the Middle East grew following a military putsch in Iraq; King Hussein of Jordan, who proclaimed himself head of Jordan and Iraq, remained on the throne, but any military action on his part was seen as likely to draw in president Nassar of the United Arab Republic on the Iraqi rebels’ side.
