Free Press Head Start for July 14

Good morning.

Intoxication, speeding and distracted driving are contributing to the number of fatal accidents on Manitoba roadways — on track to meet or exceed a 17-year high. Tyler Searle reports.

After four decades on Portage Avenue, Book Fair Comics is at risk of closing its doors, according to owner Judy Weselowski. And hers isn’t the only downtown business struggling as the Dec. 31 deadline for the Canada Emergency Business Account inches closer. Cierra Bettens has the story.

On the bright side

An Indian spacecraft blazed its way to the far side of the moon Friday in a follow-up mission to its failed effort nearly four years ago to land a rover softly on the lunar surface, the country’s space agency said.

Chandrayaan-3, the word for “moon craft” in Sanskrit, took off from a launch pad in Sriharikota in southern India with an orbiter, a lander and a rover, in a demonstration of India’s emerging space technology. The spacecraft is set to embark on a journey lasting slightly over a month before landing on the moon’s surface later in August. The Associated Press reports.

On this date

On July 14, 1969: The Winnipeg Free Press reported an unmanned Soviet spacecraft launched, heading for the moon, amid speculation the mission was meant to take the spotlight away from the Apollo 11 mission, and return to Earth with samples from the lunar surface; the Luna XV craft would reach the moon in three days, around the time three U.S. astronauts would launch to make the same journey. Prime minister Pierre Trudeau seemed to receive a cool welcome in Churchill, where members of the media outnumbered locals at the prime minister’s first appearance as part of a six-day tour of Western Canada.
