On July 2, 1912: The Manitoba Free Press reported that Regina, Sask., was still in a state of chaos following a cyclone that hit the city, followed by severe rains; 26 people were reported dead and the streets were being patrolled by members of the North West Mounted Police, though the city was not under martial law. In Boston, aviator Harriet Quimby and her passenger were killed when her Bleriot monoplane plunged into Dorchester Bay from a height of 1,000 feet; Quimby was the first woman to win an aviator’s licence in America and the first woman to cross the English Channel in an airplane.
