The thunderstorm has passed, and we are in for a sunny, warm day in Winnipeg — unlike in the United Kingdom, which is experiencing a record-breaking heat wave so intense it is disrupting train travel. But hot weather is still causing concerns about the increased risk of wildfires, not only in Manitoba, but also Europe and Texas.

Sporting idea: Congolese-born Gode Katembo, who came to Winnipeg as an international student, saw how difficult it was for many newcomers to connect with other African immigrants in the city, and the loneliness that often went with it. So he started a soccer league, the Manitoba African Cup of Nations, which now boasts 12 teams, including Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya, Congo Brazzaville, South Sudan and Egypt. On July 20, 1949: The Winnipeg Free Press reported three children under the age of 10 were sexually assaulted by a man in the city’s West End. A royal commission into charges against Winnipeg’s police force found officers did not make a common practice of holding arrested persons incommunicado or of failing to notify people a prisoner had requested to be notified, nor were there many instances in which detainees were severely beaten. The Canadian Seamen’s Union strike was reportedly influenced by communist operatives hoping to cripple the world economy. READ MORE
