The city will provide safe walks and patrols will be increased around downtown arts venues in response to performers and staff feeling unsafe while working in the inner city.
The safety measures are part of the new Performing Arts Wayfinder Program, which will use $100,000 in funding from the mayor’s office for two additional Downtown Community Safety Partnership staff members to focus on safe walks and patrols for performers, audience members and staff.
The program is scheduled to begin in September and run through June 2027. Scott Billeck has the story.

On the bright side
A First Nation in British Columbia says a new native plant orchard established in its territory could help reclaim and restore thousands of industrial sites around northeastern B.C.
The Blueberry First Nations near Fort St. John unveiled the orchard last week, and Chief Sherry Dominic said it will produce native plants for sale to industry partners in the oil and gas sector, as well as Indigenous communities.
The nation says in a statement the garden will eventually have 1.7 million seedlings from a representative supply of grasses, shrubs, wildflowers and trees to reflect various layers of a healthy forest system. The Canadian Press has more here.

On July 21, 1943: The Winnipeg Free Press reported Canadian and U.S. forces drove to within 28 miles of the north Sicilian coast after capturing the main Axis communication centre of Enna. U.S. bombers in the southwest Pacific sank three and perhaps four warships during the largest-ever Japanese attempt to reinforce their base at Vila in the central Solomons.
