Urban reserve finalized: Manitoba’s seven Treaty 1 nations have signed a deal to create Canada’s largest urban reserve in southwest Winnipeg, on land that formerly housed the Kapyong military barracks on Kenaston Boulevard. Sagkeeng woman speaks out: Victoria McIntosh, who attended Fort Alexander Residential School decades ago, told RCMP a Catholic priest at the school had sexually abused her when she was just 10 years old. Last month, 92-year-old Arthur Masse was charged. “I’m not a savage,” she says. “Neither are my people. We’re a kind, giving people, and we’d help out anybody that comes to us. On July 21, 1959: The Winnipeg Free Press reported police had arrested three youths — two Gordon Bell High School students, and a messenger boy who was not a student — following an investigation of theft of high school exam papers. The investigation followed Free Press reports that students had improper possession of exam question papers. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were expected in Winnipeg in three days as part of the royal couple’s tour of Canada. READ MORE
