On July 23, 1973: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that tensions between the prime minister and western premiers seemed to be easing ahead of an economic conference designed to change the West. In Dubai, anti-Israeli hijackers who had captured a Japan Air Lines jetliner with 143 people aboard were set to take off, telling the control tower the hijackers were to be known as the “Mount Carmel martyrs.” The Soviet Union launched an unmanned mission to the planet Mars.
