Free Press Head Start for July 26

Good morning!

In case you (or your pets) got a poor night’s sleep with all the thunder crashing, be warned there’s a chance of more stormy weather this afternoon, so a much-needed nap may be off the agenda. In the meantime, watch out for puddles as you head out this morning… and pack an umbrella, just in case.

Today’s must-read

Papal apology: Indigenous people from Manitoba were among those who travelled to Alberta to hear Pope Francis deliver an apology for the Roman Catholic Church’s involvement in Canada’s residential school system. Cynthia Bunn, a residential school survivor from Sagkeeng, said hearing the apology spoken aloud was “very emotional… It’s been a long time coming.” John Longhurst reports.

On this date

On July 26, 1940: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a relatively small force of British and native troops was digging in to hold Africa and the Near East against 300,000 Italian troops, who were in turn being menaced by the British naval blockade against their supply ships. France’s surrender to Germany had changed Britain’s plans for a swift expulsion of the Italians from Africa. In Canada, the federal government sought complete knowledge and control over firearms across the country with Parliament eyeing the registration of rifles and shotguns before Sept. 15. A Winnipeg mechanic had devised plans for a “monster” tank, which he hoped to sell to the Canadian military for use in the war. Search our archives for more here.
