Free Press Head Start for July 29

Good morning.

In local news, Winnipeggers have lost an estimated $100,000 in a string of telephone scams in which a caller claims to be a grandchild or niece or nephew in legal trouble and needs money immediately.

A man charged in the killing of a Nigerian immigrant in a Winnipeg bus shelter pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Looking abroad, Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of shelling a prison in Olenivka, in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region, that reportedly killed dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war captured in May.
