Despite more than six months of economic threats that have sparked anger and strained cross-border relations, the United States ambassador to Canada believes the bond between his country and this one is solid.
Pete Hoekstra, who spoke to about 250 local business leaders Tuesday at a Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce luncheon, likened the current state of relations between the two nations to a cloth that’s been pulled and stretched, taking on a new shape.

On the bright side
It’s been a tasty season on set for the creators of the Diabetic Kitchen, a forthcoming Manitoba cooking and lifestyle show featuring diabetic-friendly recipes and local products.
“I wish I had a show like this back when I was first diagnosed,” says director George Orallo.
Eva Wasney has the details on the series which will air on Fibe TV1 later this year.

On July 30, 1941: The Winnipeg Free Press reported provincial health authorities were asking those who recovered from infantile paralysis — also known as polio — to donate blood in order to create a serum to help fight the outbreak of the disease. Munitions minister Clarence Decatur Howe told reporters 300 men seized control of an aluminum plant in Arvida, Que., causing a loss of three weeks worth of production. A red, 11-foot-tall ‘V’ was erected on city hall, and the remaining words “for victory” were to be added by the end of the day.
