Bear attack: A Winnipeg couple hiking on the Mantario Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park told Tuesday how they were attacked by a bear. “All of a sudden it felt like someone kicked my legs from behind,” said Ryan Potter, 44. Carol Sanders reports. READ MORE

Investigating safe-injection sites: The provincial government has declined repeated requests for supervised-injection sites in Winnipeg, but that hasn’t stopped an independent coalition of health workers and advocates from going ahead with research into whether drug-consumption spaces are needed in the city. According to a Free Press-Probe Research poll, 69 per cent of 600 Winnipeg adults surveyed said they would generally support the introduction of a safe-injection site to the city. Laine scores with kids: Jets fan favourite Patrik Laine helped calm kids Monday night after they were frightened by a drunken passenger causing a disturbance aboard a flight from Malaga, Spain to Helsinki. After the flight made an unscheduled stop in Paris, where police handcuffed the unruly man and carted him off the plane, Laine, who was also aboard the flight, talked to the children, signing autographs and posing for pictures. On July 4, 1936: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that following a coroner’s inquest, charges of manslaughter would be laid against a farmer in the Ledwyn district in the death of his neighbour, a farmer in the same district. Nine new names were added to the list of candidates in the upcoming provincial election, bringing the total to 73. Manitoba premier John Bracken, who had governed for fourteen years, submitted his platform and highlighted his public record to voters. READ MORE
